Detailed Itinerary

Day 1-2

Drop into San José international airport, grab your bags, and grab a air-conditioned van to the Monteverde region and the mysterious Monteverde Cloud Forest! Your first few days will be spent enjoying the magnificent cloud forest at a very special hotel, Sapo Dorado Hotel. With only 30 rooms, and just minutes away from the Monteverde Cloud Forest, Sapo Dorado is a great spot for doing some nature walking and exploring. All rooms have two double beds, private bath and balcony with ocean or mountain views. On site amenities include an unbelievable restaurant specializing in natural, original recipes that include national as well as international cuisine.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest preserve, the main attraction in the area, supports over six different life zones which includes over 100 species of mammals, over 400 species of birds (including the infamous Quetzal ) and butterflies, 120 species of amphibians and reptiles, 2500 species of plants as well as tens of thousands of insect species. This is a great place for families, couples or for any traveler looking to get off the beaten path and relax in a quiet, mountain atmosphere.

This reserve, under the administration of the Tropical Science Center, is known worldwide for its biodiversity and is visited each year by many tourists and scientists. We would strongly recommend that all those who visit Monteverde take a hike at one of the two reserves. A guide is a plus as you will learn a lot but this is an awesome experience with our with our a naturalist guide. All the trails are in fair condition and well marked.

Day 3-4

Continue to the beautiful Arenal Volcano region travelling first by bus and then by boat though the Arenal Lake. You will spend these days enjoying majestic views of the Arenal active volcano at a very special hot springs hotel, Arenal Kioro. The Kioro is just 10 kilometers from La Fortuna in San Carlos, with a spectacular view of Arenal Volcano. Family run and friendly and great personal service. It's surrounded by two streams with clear waters that flow from the nearby National Park. Only 53 chalet suites with international restaurant on premises, and a breathtaking panoramic view (every room has two terraces. Arenal is an active volcano, sometimes with spectacular lava flows at night! Your stay includes unlimited access to their local thermal waters nearby.

We certainly suggest the overland 2 Mountains Horseback Riding tour between Arenal and Monteverde; pack your bags onto your horse, or for a small fee have them driven from Arenal to Monteverde! Day 5-7

Next, a quick jaunt to San José, where you will pick up an in-country flight to Palmar Sur, then land transport from Palmar Sur to the town of Sierpe, and THEN you take boat transport from Sierpe to Casa Corcovado. You can't get much farther from civilization than that!

You will be staying at the Casa Corcovado Jungle Lodge, a lodge built upon a 170-acre private reserve right on the border of the Corcovado National Park. Accommodations at this "Lost World" adventure resort are artfully-appointed individual bungalows offering unpretentious comfort, mosquito-netted beds, ceiling fan, tiled floors, lounge area, dry mini bar, safety deposit box, hammock, and ample closets. Roomy private bathrooms have hot water showers and designer fixtures.

Corcovado is an amazing rainforest, and a protected region of Costa Rica. It is the backpacking experience of a lifetime.

It encompasses the only remaining old growth wet forests on the Pacific coast of Central America, and 13 major ecosystems including lowland rain forest, highland cloud forest, jolillo palm forest, and mangrove swamps, as well as coastal marine and beach habitats.

You'll have two incredible tours to take. The first one is the Corcovado National Park Tour, a full day hiking trip with lunch and snacks. A bilingual guide will show you how the ecosystems work, and why it's a protected region. Breathe in beauty, learn about nature, and see some of the most beautiful flora and fauna in the world.

Next, it's a Tour to Caño Island by boat! Caño Island has some of the most abundant marine life in the world. There are also pre-Columbian artifacts (bolas, basically big spheres of rock) that dot the island. Boat to the island, then hike your way through the lushness of nature.

Because Casa Corcovado is a remote destination, all meals and tours are included. Relax, hike, boat, and explore land known to only a few!

OPTIONAL: If you're a scuba diver, and have an extra day, then you must take the Caño Island Diving adventure tour. Caño Island offers some of the most exciting diving anywhere in the world, and it's marine diversity is unmatched on earth.

Day 8

Finally it's back to civilization, transportation included to the San Jose International airport. Two mountains and chalets, hot springs, and a remote, very small, very romantic hotel, what a great way to see Costa Rica!
