Detailed Itinerary
Day 1
Your first day in Costa Rica is in San José at the Grano de Oro Hotel, a 35 40 room hotel, a true oasis in the heart of the capital city, San José. The hotel exudes the charm and character of a stately mansion with the comforts and amenities of a fine hotel. It has a secluded terrace garden with large jacuzzis and courtyards filled with fountains and tropical flowers.
Delicious meals and desserts are served in the dining room, adjacent sunroom and tropical patio. This hotel is a great location for exploring the cultural diversity of Costa Rica! Located close to shops, museums, and restaurants, you'll have time to explore the friendly environment of Costa Rica's capital city.
Day 2-3
Then journey to the Caribbean to Pachira Lodge, a 14-acre lodge, 5 minutes away from the Tortuguero National Park, a navigable network of water canals that crisscross the entire region. Tortuguero National Park is an area known worldwide for it's richness in biodiversity.
This lodge is a haven for nature lovers and adventurous people, it features 85 delightful rooms, all with a private bathroom, hot water and ceiling fan. The rooms have no telephone or television since the idea is to "switch off" modern conveniences in order to appreciate the beauty of nature.
Facilities and services include a safety depostit box at the reception desk, a swimming pool, gift shop, laundry service, bar and restaurant, boat and hiking tours, bilingual guides and forest trails. One of the great reasons to stay here is, of course, Tortuguero National Park, which is a navigable network of lake and canals that cross the National Park from Southeast to Northwest and accessible only by land, boat or air. There are no roads to get here!
All stays include 3 meals a day, transportation from San José, and regular tours into the park. Paddle or boat into the heart of Costa Rica!
Day 4-7
Next you'll be traveling to the Osa Peninsula, which is south and west of San José. This is a very remote region as well. How remote? Well, you take a flight from Tortuguero to San José, connecting with another flight to Palmar Sur, then land transport from Palmar Sur to the town of Sierpe, and THEN you take boat transport from Sierpe to Casa Corcovado. You can't get much farther from civilization than that.
You will be staying at the Casa Corcovado Jungle Lodge, a lodge built upon a 170-acre private reserve right on the border of the Corcovado National Park. Accommodations at this "Lost World" adventure resort are artfully-appointed individual bungalows offering unpretentious comfort, mosquito-netted beds, ceiling fan, tiled floors, lounge area, dry mini bar, safety deposit box, hammock, and ample closets. Roomy private bathrooms have hot water showers and designer fixtures.
Corcovado is an amazing rainforest, and a protected region of Costa Rica. It is the backpacking experience of a lifetime.
It encompasses the only remaining old growth wet forests on the Pacific coast of Central America, and 13 major ecosystems including lowland rain forest, highland cloud forest, jolillo palm forest, and mangrove swamps, as well as coastal marine and beach habitats.
You'll have two incredible tours to take. The first one is the Corcovado National Park Tour, a full day hiking trip with lunch and snacks. A bilingual guide will show you how the ecosystems work, and why it's a protected region. Breathe in beauty, learn about nature, and see some of the most beautiful flora and fauna in the world.
Next, it's a Tour to Caño Island by boat! Caño Island has some of the most abundant marine life in the world. There are also pre-Columbian artifacts (bolas, basically big spheres of rock) that dot the island. Boat to the island, then hike your way through the lushness of nature.
Because Casa Corcovado is a remote destination, all meals and tours are included. Relax, hike, boat, and explore land known to only a few!
OPTIONAL: If you're a scuba diver, and have an extra day, then you must take the Caño Island Diving adventure tour. Caño Island offers some of the most exciting diving anywhere in the world, and it's marine diversity is unmatched on earth.
OPTIONAL: If you're a bird watcher, then this place is paradise for you! Over 350 species of birds can be found in Corcovado. Click here for a complete list of birds.
Day 8
Return to San José to spend your last night in Costa Rica at the Grano de Oro Hotel. Take in the scenery, and talk about your adventures! Spend a few last hours shopping and relaxing in this charming capital city.
Day 9
Drive to San José International airport to take the plane back to home, relaxed, invigorated, with plenty of memories!
