Rincon de La Vieja National Park
Introduction
Come and enjoy the Guanacaste tropical forest! Departure by bus from the hotel Hacienda Guachipelin and drive for approximately 20min reaching
the entrance of the national park. Rincon de la Vieja, the largest volcano in the country's northwest, comprises a remote volcanic complex in the
Guanacaste Range. At least nine eruptive vents are located within a 15-kilometer-wide caldera. The twin cone of 1,916 meter Santa Maria volcano,
the highest peak of the Rincon complex, features an incactive crater 500 meters across. The tour begins with a hike along one of the main trails
that winds through primary forest, transition forest and tropical forest. The wildlife of this park is extremely varied.
Almost 300 species of birds have been recorded here, including quetzals, bellbirds, parrots, toucans, hummingbirds, owls, and more. Mammals are equally varied: deer,
armadillos, peccaries, skunks, squirrels, coatis and three species of monkeys are frequently seen. This trail take you past the lava Flows. The
last major eruption of Rincon de la Vieja occurred about 3,500 years ago. All subsequent eruptions, including numerous historical events dating back
to the 16th century, have occurred in the mountain's lake-filled active crater. We will stop at a nice camp park to enjoy a packed box lunch and following
this meal return to the hotel.
